This work provides access to approximately 5,000 reviews of English-language mathematical books published in North America. Included are works on mathematics, science, philosophy, and education appearing in the periodical literature from 1800 to 1940. It covers materials not reviewed in Book Review Index and Book Review Digest. It predates Mathematical Reviews, which first appeared in 1940. Books on all aspects of mathematics are included. There are subject, reviewer, and title indexes.
This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.

All aspects of education are covered, including American elementary and secondary education, higher adult education, early childhood education, history and philosophy of education, international and comparative education, administration, education of the culturally disadvantaged and physically challenged, education of minorities, education of women, and administrative reports of departments of education in the US and abroad. The listing is intended as a supplement to the Dictionary Catalogue of the Teachers College Library, Columbia University (G.K. Hall, 1970).

This five-year cumulative index provides access by subject, title, and author to reviews of the 9,284 reference works covered in the last five volumes of ARBA.
