The second study was conducted to determine the effects of feeding an undegraded intake protein (UIP) supplement, balanced to provide at the site of absorption a profile of amino acids that matched the tissue requirements of 250 kg Holstein steers gaining 1 kg/d. Absorption of amino acids reached a plateau at the 7.5% level of UIP supplementation, while whole-body N utilization increased linearly with to the 10% UIP supplementation. Net uptake of amino acids by the hindlimb was also highest at the 7.5% level. Balancing the amino acid profile appeared to increase the efficiency with which the amino acids were utilized.
